I get the following error:
Server: Msg 4408, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
The query and the views or functions in it exceed the limit of 256 tables.
I have a fairly large Query which works fine and I do have about 6 Views
that I delete and recreate over and over. There is nowhere near 256 tables.
What would cause this?
I am running this from Sql Query Analyser run from EM.

I just found out that a View that I use works fine if built from actual
tables. But then I needed to change the View to be built from another View
as I had to combine some records from 2 tables before creating the View.

This View is created from a Table CheckSummHE (an earnings table)
We then found that we needed to move some deduction records from our
deduction table before building the EarningsWithRank table. So I created a
view that just moved some records from the deduction table. I then modified

Then anytime I run a select that refers to this table, I get the error.
Why does this cause an error? I assume I would need to create a temporary
table instead of a View then build the EarningsWithRank from that.
Is that correct?

when you use views instead of tables then, the problem may be ownership
chain (pemissions) problem where you cant exceed 256 objects( which is
practically unlikely)

Are you aware that the view name is replaced by the view definition when
the query gets executed?
E.g. if you run:
CREATE VIEW V
AS
SELECT Tab1.X, Tab1.Z, Tab2.A

SELECT V1.X, V2.Z
FROM V AS V1
JOIN V AS V2

Then the optimizer gets to see this:
SELECT V1.X, V2.Z
FROM (SELECT Tab1.X, Tab1.Z, Tab2.A
FROM Tab1
JOIN Tab2

JOIN (SELECT Tab1.X, Tab1.Z, Tab2.A

If this is about the query I think it is about, then each of the 6 views
in included quite a lot of times - and each of the 6 tables refers to
(if I remember correctly) 2 or 3 tables. You do the maths.
An easy way to verify if this is correct is to reduce the number of
times each view is included in the query until the error stops.

And yes it is about the Query we have been doing for the last w
(there isalways a new wrinkle coming up). It is working well.
And I found the problem, which was that I was trying to create a View from
another View. This happened because I needed to pull some records from the
Deduction table before I created the EarningsWithRank table. But that was
where I got the error.
I ended up change the first View to Copy directly into a table first and
then create the 2nd View from that table.

Hi Tom,
Well, the first one is a UNION of two tables (BTW, can you change it to
UNION ALL without messing up correctness? Will probably run faster!).
Each time you refer to that as a view, you are actually referring to two
tables. The EarningsWithRank view refers to EarningsDeductions twice.
Expend the view definition into this, and you've got a total of four
tables (maybe five if the derived table is counted as well). Use a temp
table for EarningsDeductions, and EarningsWithRank now suddenly only
usese two (or three) tables.
How often do you have EarningsWithRank in your query? Ten times, if I
recall correctly? If so, then using a temp table instead of the first
view has reduced the number of tables in the complete query by twenty!
