Query Help

Hoping the community can help me with this problem. I have a stored
procedure that returns a few alias fields.
Here is the select clause to give you an idea what I am talking about (FROM
and WHERE omitted to shorten the length):
SELECT DriverTable.DriverLastName, DriverTable.DriverFirstName,
DriverTable.DriverMiddleInitial,[Company Table].CompanyName, [Locations
Table].LocationName,
CASE WHEN DriverLicenseRenewDate <= GETDATE()
THEN 'Drivers Licanse has Expired'
WHEN DriverLicenseRenewDate > GETDATE() AND DriverLicenseRenewDate <
DATEADD(dd, 60, GETDATE())
THEN 'Drivers Licanse expires within the next 60 days' END AS DLRenewDate,
CASE WHEN [Driver'sLicensePhoto] = 0 THEN 'Send Copy of Driver''s License'
END AS DLPhoto,
CASE WHEN DriverEmploymentDateHired >= '8/17/2001' AND
[DriverPre-employmentDrugTestDate]IS NULL THEN 'Send Copy of Current Driver
Pre-employment Drug Test' END AS [DPre-Employ], CASE WHEN
[DriverEmploymentDateHired] >= '8/17/2001' AND
[DriverPre-employment4025(j)DrugQuestion] = 0 THEN 'Send Copy of Driver
Pre-employment Form (40.25(j)' END AS DPre4025DrugTest
This query has 4 alias's to be returned; DLRenewDate,DLPhoto,[DPre-Employ],
and DPre4025DrugTest. My problem is that if all 4 are returned NULL I do
not want the record to be returned with the query. If I could have a WHERE
like this:
WHERE DLRenewDate IS NOT NULL AND DLPhoto IS NOT NULL AND [DPre-Employ] IS
NOT NULL AND DPre4025DrugTest IS NOT NULL
then it would not be a problem, but you cannot test alias's in this manner
(as far as I can tell). What are my options for solving this problem? If I
was in Access I could run a second query on the first and test my
conditions. Can I use another Stored procedure in this manner?
For Example a second stored procedure that works like this:
Select * From StoredProcedure1
WHERE DLRenewDate IS NOT NULL AND DLPhoto IS NOT NULL AND [DPre-Employ] IS
NOT NULL AND DPre4025DrugTest IS NOT NULLHi
To reduce the amount of typing you have to do, you can use a table alias for
the table. see Books Online:
mk:@.MSITStore:C:\Program%20Files\Microso
ft%20SQL%20Server\80\Tools\Books\acd
ata.chm::/ac_8_qd_05_4ofn.htm
Instead of using the column alias in the WHERE clause, use the actual
expression. As these are CASE statements returning non null values when they
are satisfied they will only return null if non of the clauses are returned,
so these can be tested in the WHERE clause
e.g
For:
CASE WHEN DriverLicenseRenewDate <= GETDATE()
THEN 'Drivers Licanse has Expired'
WHEN DriverLicenseRenewDate > GETDATE() AND DriverLicenseRenewDate <
DATEADD(dd, 60, GETDATE())
THEN 'Drivers Licanse expires within the next 60 days'
END AS DLRenewDate
This will only be null if
NOT ( DriverLicenseRenewDate <= GETDATE()
OR ( DriverLicenseRenewDate > GETDATE() AND DriverLicenseRenewDate <
DATEADD(dd, 60, GETDATE()) ) )
Which is the same as
DriverLicenseRenewDate > GETDATE()
AND DriverLicenseRenewDate >= DATEADD(dd, 60, GETDATE()) )

query datetime range, how to optimize

Hi,
My query 1 needs to narrow down a time range. I index the column
(pos_trandate_time, plus the other on the where clause), but the performance
still very slow, around 1 minutes. Wherease the query on date only is much
faster. What should I do?
--query 1, cost 99%
select CONVERT(char(8), pos_trandate_time, 3) as tx_date, CONVERT(char(8),
pos_trandate_time, 8) as tx_time, pos_purchase_amt as tx_amt,

as tx_msg_type, pos_trans_code as tx_tran_type

and pos_trandate_time <= '2004-07-05 23:59:59'
order by pos_trandate_time
-- query 2, cost %1

I actully use CONVERT(dt_field) function in the where clause, since dt_field
is an indexed field, this may cuase query not using index. So the performace
should be bad, but actually testing shows it is much faster, Strange!!
Thanks

query datetime range, how to optimize

Hi,
My query 1 needs to narrow down a time range. I index the column
(pos_trandate_time, plus the other on the where clause), but the performance
still very slow, around 1 minutes. Wherease the query on date only is much
faster. What should I do?
--query 1, cost 99%
select CONVERT(char(8), pos_trandate_time, 3) as tx_date, CONVERT(char(8),
pos_trandate_time, 8) as tx_time, pos_purchase_amt as tx_amt,
pos_cashback_amt as tx_cashback_amt, pos_seq_no as tx_seq_no, pos_msg_type
as tx_msg_type, pos_trans_code as tx_tran_type
from pos_txn_log (index=pk_pos_txn_log)
where pos_tid ='80007001' and pos_trandate_time >= '2004-07-05 00:00:00'
and pos_trandate_time <= '2004-07-05 23:59:59'
order by pos_trandate_time
-- query 2, cost %1
select CONVERT(char(8), pos_trandate_time, 3) as tx_date, CONVERT(char(8),
pos_trandate_time, 8) as tx_time,
pos_purchase_amt as tx_amt, pos_cashback_amt as tx_cashback_amt, pos_seq_no
as tx_seq_no, pos_msg_type as tx_msg_type,
pos_trans_code as tx_tran_type
from pos_txn_log where pos_tid ='80007001' and pos_rid ='11180007000' and
CONVERT(char(8), pos_settlementdate, 3) = '05/07/04'
order by pos_trandate_time
Thanks
WangWhat happens when you take OFF the index hint
"from pos_txn_log (index=pk_pos_txn_log) "

I actully use CONVERT(dt_field) function in the where clause, since dt_field
is an indexed field, this may cuase query not using index. So the performace
should be bad, but actually testing shows it is much faster, Strange!!
Thanks

Query cannot be updated because the FROM clause

Hi everybody,

I have a problem. My provider(ISP) is supporting SQL Native Client driver and my forum supplier is only supporting SQLOLEDB. I am trying to access our sql2005 DB located at our ISP.

I have changed this line:

strCon = "Provider=SQLOLEDB;Connection Timeout=90;" & strCon

To:
strCon = "Driver={SQL Native Client};Connection Timeout=90;" & strCon

Now I can access the database, but when I am trying to loging I get this error:

Server Error in Forum Application
An error has occured while writing to the database.
Please contact the forum administrator.

Support Error Code:- err_SQLServer_loginUser()_update_USR_Code
File Name:- functions_login.asp

Error details:-
Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers
Query cannot be updated because the FROM clause is not a single simple table name.

What can I do? I am stuck in between and need a solution.....

Regards Gerry!

This is usually because you created an ADODB.Recordset, grabbed a query that JOINed two or more tables, and then attempted to perform an AddNew or Update through the recordset object. To resolve this issue, use an INSERT or UPDATE statement directly against the connection object, and if using SQL Server, use a stored procedure call.|||

"SQL Native Client" contains both a new ODBC driver and OLEDB provider for SQL 2005.

My guess is that the problem is caused by chaning from a straight OLEDB provider to OLEDB for ODBC + SQL Native client ODBC driver. Can you try changing your connect string as follows:

strCon = "Provider=SQLNCLI;Connection Timeout=90;" & strCon
